Recover the working data. Plan the return to work.
An unreadable drive can interrupt a project, a business or years of personal records. Define the data you need, the affected systems and any evidence requirement before someone repairs or resets the device.
A working-data recovery and an evidence-preservation assignment have different objectives. Open a situation below to see which details change the scope.
Identify the NAS, RAID or server volume, each original disk position and the sequence of failures. Record rebuild attempts and any replacement disks already introduced.
Name the authorised contact, the folders or date range needed first and the person who will validate the recovered material. Agree the destination and access method before returning sensitive working data.
An intermittent enclosure, power path, connector or storage controller can present similar symptoms. Seeing a volume briefly does not establish that another long scan is safe or useful.
Stop unnecessary tests. Supply the device and enclosure models, any liquid or impact history and the last successful access. The assessment selects a device-specific electronic or logical route rather than treating every SSD as a clean-room case.
Record the model and the failure before changing boards, reinstalling the system or erasing storage. On encrypted devices, repairing or replacing hardware and regaining access to the original files are separate questions.
Ask the account holder or organisation whether recovery credentials are available. Keep passwords and keys out of the public form. An assessment cannot guarantee access to encrypted data without the required credentials.
Explain the question being investigated, the systems involved and who can authorise examination. Retain the original media and document changes already made.
Digital forensics is separately scoped. Custody, acquisition, examination and reporting requirements are agreed for the assignment. A repair estimate does not include an investigative report or a guarantee of admissibility.
Describe unusual sounds, impact, liquid, fire exposure or previous opening without powering the drive again to demonstrate the problem.
Advanced physical recovery and clean-room access can be arranged through specialist partners. The scope identifies handling, transfer, costs, timing and the intended recovered-data destination before the proposed work starts.
The scope identifies priority folders, acceptable file formats, destination storage and the person who will check the result. It also explains which physical interventions or specialist transfers may be needed.
For an organisation, name an authorised contact and explain the effect on its working systems. Keep unrelated personal or client information out of the initial enquiry.
You need a record of what happened
If the device may be relevant to an investigation, dispute or incident, say so before recovery or repair changes it. Preservation, custody and examination need their own agreed scope.
Digital forensics is separately quoted. The C$50 repair and recovery estimate does not include an evidence acquisition, investigative report or testimony.
What failed: the device, drive or shared volume, including model and capacity where known.
What changed: the failure, previous recovery attempts, resets, physical work or new files written afterward.
What matters: priority folders, file types, date ranges and the operational deadline.
Who can approve: the device or data owner and the authorised contact for the proposed work.
How it will return: destination storage, access arrangements and a practical check of the recovered material.
Do not upload private files, account passwords or encryption keys through the public website. Agree a suitable transfer method after the initial scope is reviewed.
An agreed handover and a separate recovery quote
Begin with the assessment.
Vancouver assessment
C$50 for an online or arranged drop-off estimate. Submit online by 2 p.m. or drop off by 2 p.m. for the estimate by the end of that business day after acceptance of a complete request.
Arrange the handover at Office 404, 999 Canada Place, during the confirmed 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. reception window. The device reference and instructions come before the visit.
Before specialist work starts
The recovery route, responsible specialists, handling, costs and likely timing are agreed before work proceeds. Clean-room work is a specialist route for appropriate physical hard-drive faults, not the answer to every SSD or file-system problem.
Recovery depends on the original condition of the data. No particular file or outcome is guaranteed, and files are not restored back onto failing media as a routine recovery destination.
